RAINBOW around the block……

Anna Maria Horner is organizing a quilting project for families in Middle Tennessee who lost their homes to flooding. She is accepting unfinished 12.5×12.5 inch blocks  preferably in a monochromatic color scheme or two harmonious colors in any patchwork style that you’d like. You may make as many blocks as you would like to make!! She is organizing  Nashville volunteers to help assemble into quilts. Her mother, MaryLynn Demacopoulos will be collecting them on July 2, August 2 and September 2. You may bring the blocks to Gina’s. For more detailed information visit annamariahorner.com/rainbow.html or contact rainbow@annamariahorner.com

Handmade by Grandmother……

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Sandy, one of our customers made these exquisite dolls for her granddaughters!  She got the pattern out of the latest issue of Inspirations Magazine. The hair was knit from 2 skeins of wool yarn. She soaked it in water, let it dry, pulled it apart and stitched each strand on by hand, each doll takes 2 skeins. The faces are beautifully hand embroidered. Notice the Kaffe Fassett fabric she used for the dresses. They are lovingly named Mathilda Wilhemina, Agatha Elizabeth, and Adelaide Agnes after Sandy’s Aunts. Thanks for sharing Sandy! We love it when you bring your projects to us.

Flat Felled Seams…. a tutorial!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

What is a flat felled seam?? I am so glad you asked! It is a reinforced decorative seam that is totally enclosed on both right and wrong sides of the garment, making it a good choice for reversible garments. It is also what I call a “jeans seam”. This  is also a great seam for home dec projects and bags. Just follow along and you will have very professional looking seams!

Step 1:  Sew seam at 5/8 of an inch. WAIT…..Wrong sides together!!!

Step 2:  Press both sides to the one side.

Step 3:  Trim away the seam allowance on the bottom.

Step 4:  Turn seam allowance under and press down. This is the step that makes it decorative, enclosed,  reversible and very sturdy. Awesome.

Step 5:  Now, stitch down the edge you have just pressed.

!

Is that not the coolest?? And how easy was that?

The  BERNINA Foot #38 will make your sewing even easier! The bi-level base of this foot is ideal for sewing where one side of the presser foot must ride over muliple thicknesses and the other side over a single layer. Perfect for flat felled seams, attaching braid and attaching hook and loop tape.

Have fun sewing!!
