English Paper Piecing 101 in Knoxville
English paper piecing (EPP) is a hand sewing technique that offers precision, portability, and endless design possibilities. This technique-focused class is designed to give students a strong foundation in English Paper Piecing without the pressure of finishing a project in class.
Students will learn and practice two basting methods (thread and glue) and two hand-sewing techniques (whip stitch and flat back stitch), with plenty of hands-on stitching time. We'll also explore hexagon basics and discuss design considerations such as fabric choice, value, and layout strategies for future EPP projects.
This is a highly interactive class intended to build confidence and skill. Students will leave with multiple basted and stitched pieces and the knowledge to apply these techniques to any English paper piecing project they choose.
No prior English paper piecing experience required.
Supply list:
?Fat quarters or a charm pack of quilting cotton?
(Light to medium value fabrics work best; scrappy selections are encouraged—charm packs are a great option)
?2” hexagon paper templates
?Optional: 2” hexagon 3/8” windowed acrylic template (useful for fussy cutting)
?“Add a Quarter” or “Add a Quarter Plus” ruler
?80 wt neutral hand sewing thread (Aurifil recommended)
?Hand sewing needles (Size 9 or 10 sharps recommended)
?Fabric-safe glue stick (Sewline Fabric Glue Pen recommended)
?50 wt thread for thread basting
?Rotary cutter or fabric scissors
?Small scissors or thread snips
