Beginning Quilt Making in Brentwood with Kayla

In just six weeks, you'll complete your quilt! In this class, you'll learn how to choose your fabrics, acquire the tools of the trade, learn precision cutting, pressing, precise piecing, attaching borders, quilting the three layers, and binding your quilt.
Please be able to thread and operate your sewing machine. Know how to thread and sew a straight stitch.
All Fabric, Tools, Sewing Notions are available at Gina's Bernina Sewing Studio.
You will be using "Jelly Twist" by Cluck Cluck as your pattern.
Supplies Needed for Class:
- Sewing machine with its accessories, pedal, power cord, and manual
- 1/4” foot
- Pack of new 80/12 needles
- Seam ripper
- Neutral colored thread (quality 50 wt. cotton thread is industry standard)
- Straight pins for piecing with pin cushion of choice (magnetic ones are great)
- Thread snips
- Awl/Stiletto
- Rotary Cutting Mat —NO smaller than 18” x 24” (24” x 36” is preferred)
- Rotary Cutter with fresh blades — 45mm is a great size
- Quilting Rulers 6.5” x 24” and 6.5” square (Quilter’s Select is my favorite)
- Iron and wool mat for pressing (optional, we will have a couple pressing stations)
- Safety pins for basting (2” is my favorite)
- Notebook and something to write with

Class Agenda:
Week 1 of Class
1. Learn beginning basics: how to choose fabrics, how to prepare fabric for cutting, and how to cut fabric.
2. Tour the shop
3. Pick fabrics
4. Prepare and cut fabric for our Jelly Twist pattern
*You will not need your sewing machines for week 1. We will be focusing on choosing, prepping, and cutting our fabric. Please bring your rotary cutters, rotary mats, and quilting rulers. It is optional to bring your own wool pressing mat and iron. We will have a couple pressing stations available.
Week 2 of Class
- Practice sewing an accurate 1/4” seam
- Learn different pressing techniques and the “why” behind them
- Piece all the blocks together
Week 3 of Class
- Sew blocks to one another to form the quilt top
Week 4 of Class
1. Learn about batting, basting, and quilting styles
- Prepare and Sew backing together
- Prepare binding
Week 5 of Class
- Baste your quilt
- Quilt your quilt
Week 6 of Class
- Learn about quilt labels and make one if you choose
- Attach binding to your quilt
